Twenty one pilots was formed by Tyler Joseph,who is lead vocalist today, Nick Thomas, and Chris Salih while they were all in highschool in 2009. By 2011, Nick Thomas and Chris Salih left the band to go pursue their own careers which left Tyler and new member Josh Dun,who is lead drummer, to be the duo they are today. The duo is best known for singles of their's like "stressed out","Ride", and The song "Heathens" from the 2016 film "Suicide Squad". They recieved a Grammy Award for the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the59th Annual Grammy Awards for there song "Stressed Out".

Their album debut, Vessel, was released in 2013 and became the second album in history on which every track received at least a gold certification, making Twenty One Pilots the first band in the history of music to see every song on two albums earn gold or platinum awards. They achieved breakthrough success with their album,"Blurryface" which had some of their most successful singles on it like "Stressed Out" and "Ride"and became the first album in history on which every track received at least a gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America. When they released "Heathens in 2016 it also made the group the first alternative artist in history to have two concurrent top five singles in the Billboard Hot 100 and the third rock act in history to have two singles be on the the top five on the chart of the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time, the only other two artist to do this was the Beatles and Elvis Presley. The duo also has nine No. 1 songs on the Alternative Songs chart, making them the sixth with most number-one songs on the chart.
