Claude Monet

Early Life

Claude Monet was born on November 14, 1840, Rue Laffitte, Paris. On the 20th of May 1841 Claude was baptised in the local parish chruch Notre-Dame-de-Lorette, later Claude became an atheist. In 1845 Claude and his family moved to Le Havre in Normandy. Claude's Father wanted Claude to go into the wholesale merchant family business, but Claude didn't want to in his fathers business, instead wanted to become a painter. Claudes mothers who was a singer loved the idea that Claude wanted to do art.

Education

From 1858 to 1860, Claude continued with his studies in Paris where he enrolled in Academie Suisse, where he met Camille Pissarro who was a neo imperssionist painter. Later Claude was called to serve in the military and served under the Chasseurs d'Afrique which are African Hunters in Algeria, from 1861 to 1862. During Claude's time in Algeria, it had a strong effect on Claude because he was inspired by the bright colors in that region. Soon after Claude got an illness which forced him back to Le Havre where Claude would meet Johan Barthold Jongkind who was a Dutch painter, printmaker, and was an important mentor to Claude.

Mental Struggles

Claude was known to struggle with self-doubt, depression, poverty, and illness throughout his life, then died in 1926.
