The "Five Families" of New York

- Boss: The head of the organization. Also known as "Godfather", "Crime Lord", or "Don".
- Acting Boss: If a boss is in prison, the acting boss will carry out the boss's orders on the street and run the family while the boss is away.
- Underboss: Second in command to the boss. Also known as "Scottocapo".
- Consigliere: A close friend or advisor to the boss who can represent him in meetings within and outside the family.
- Capo: A made member in the family who heads their own team of soldiers. Also known as "Caporegime" or "Captain".
- Made man: A fully initiated member of Italian descent who has taken the oath of silence and honor and is sponsored by an already made man. A made guy recieves the full backing and support of his family and cannot be killed without the approval or direction of a boss. Also known as "Wiseguy", "Goodfella", "Man of Honor", "One of Us", or "A Good Guy". Becoming made can also be referred to as making your "bones", "buttons", or becoming a "button man".
- Soldier: The first official level in the Mafia, soldiers have proven themselves and are recommended for induction by a capo to the boss. If accepted, the soldier will generally be placed in the crew of the capo who recommended him. The lowest level so they keep very little money and do most of the dirty work.
- Associate: Not an actual member of the family, but is committed to primarily working for one family. They run small errands and do grunt work to prove themselves and be invited into the family.
