The Amorous Perspective

Relevance

Magritte managed to influence many artists such as Duane Michals, Luis Rey, and John Baldesseri. But outside of this, he also influenced movies, and music-- many of those influences being seen in pop music, as it takes on many characteristics of Magritte's simplistic, but thoughtful works.

The Almayer's Folly

Brief History

Magritte's father was a tailor and his mother was a miliner who drowned herself when he was only 14 years old. In 1926, he woud sign a contract with a Brussels art gallery, which allowed him to become a full time painter. The same year, the gallery would allow him to hold his first solos show: "The Lost Jockey." Through almost his entire professional career, he was accompanied by his wife. In 1922, he married Georgette Berger, daughter of a butcher in Charleroi. She first met Magritte when she was 13 and he was 15. 7 eyars later they would meat again in Brussels, as Georgette was also studying art. Their marriage lasted nearly two decades, despite Magritte indulging in an affair with a young performance artist, as Georgette also began an affair with Magritte's friend.
