Jeffrey L. Koons, born January 21, 1955, is an American artist that is recognized for his work dealing with popular culture and his sculptures depicting everyday objects, for instance, balloon animals.He lives and works in both New York City and York, Pennsylvania. Two of his works broke the record auction prices for a work by a living artist, Balloon Dog (Orange) sold for $58.4 million dollars, and Rabbit sold for $91.1 million dollars.
Critics are sharply divided in their views of Koons; Some view his work as pioneering and of major art-historical importance. Others dismiss his work as kitsch, crass, and based on cynical self-merchandising. Koons has been making art for years and has stayed popular and relevant the whole time. Considering Rabbit was sold sometime last year.
Jeff Koons was born on January 21, 1955, in York, Pennsylvania. After high school, he headed south to Maryland, where he attended the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. While earning his M.F.A. there (1976), he attended a show at the Whitney Museum in New York, an exhibition that would change his life. After seeing the exhibition of Jim Nutt, Koons decided to transfer to the Art Institute of Chicago.
