The History Of Twenty One Pilots

"A Brief History Of Twenty One Pilots"

This is a video by the Youtube creator Footofaferret that is about Twenty One Pilots origins and up until the band's album Trench.

Early Years

Twenty One Pilots was formed in 2009 between Tyler Joseph and Chris Salih, his college friend. It started when Chris asked if Tyler wanted to start a band after seeing Tyler's talent as a songwriter. Tyler agreed to create a band with Chris when he saw his homemade music studio he had built inside of his house. Chris and Tyler went onto brainstorm song ideas and creating music with Chris, and right before their first show, Tyler contacted his childhood friend, Nick Thomas, if he wanted to join the band as it's bassist. Nick agreed to join the band, and in 2009 the group moved into a house together, where they would create and record their first album in the basement.

The band would play at many different venues, from hardcore to electronic, and on December 29, 2009, the band released their self-titled album, Twenty One Pilots. The band would play together in various "Battle of The Bands" competitions in 2010, but on May 8, 2011, Chris Salih left the group to focus on his work and a month later on June 3, Nick Thomas would also leave the band. Before Chris left the band he offered his position in the band to Josh Dun, a local drummer who was a friend of the band, to which Josh would accept. After the other two members left the band, Tyler and Josh created and self-released the band's second album titled Regional at Best on July 8th, 2011.

In the following year, the band announced that they were signing to Atlantic Records subsidiary Fueled by Ramen where they would release their first debut recording under them titled Three Songs on July 17, 2012. Once they were signed to Fueled by Ramen, the band then took down their album Regional at Best as "it was just a record that we had on the merch table when we were performing independently, and then we wanted to go record a real, professional record when we got signed- some of those songs we took from Regional At Best and kind of re-recorded them, and some of we had written new, since then." said Tyler Joseph during an anniversary stream of the album Vessel. On November 12, 2012, the band released a music video for their song "Holding Onto You". On January 7 of the following year, they would release a music video for the song "Guns for Hands" and on the following day, January 8, they would release their first major studio album, Vessel.
