Basic Info

Above is a model of the Eagle which was the lunar lander for Apollo 11.The Lunar Module (LM) - originally called the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) and still pronounced "lem '' after the name was changed - was the spacecraft that allowed the Apollo astronauts to land on the Moon. Built by Grumman Aerospace on Long Island, N.Y the spacecraft had two major parts: the descent stage and the ascent stage, which were carried to lunar orbit by the companion Command Service Module (CSM), a separate spacecraft of approximately twice the mass of the LM that carried the astronauts to and from Earth.

Intrepid

Intepid Info

Above is an image of the Intreprid which was the LM for Apollo 12. It was going to be the official rocket to the moon if Apollo 11 failed. So it was postponed by 2 months for take off and officialy landed on the moon. The astronauts also were to retrieve portions of the Surveyor III spacecraft, which had soft-landed on the moon April 20, 1967, a short distance from the selected landing site of the Intepid (Apollo 12).

Above is a picture of Aquarius. Which was Apollo 13's LM. NASA's third moon-landing mission, but the astronauts never made it to the lunar surface. During the mission's dramatic series of events, an oxygen tank explosion almost 56 hours into the flight forced the crew to abandon all thoughts of reaching the moon. The spacecraft was damaged, but the crew was able to seek cramped shelter in the lunar module for the trip back to Earth, before returning to the command module for an uncomfortable splashdown.

Antares

Antares Info

Above is an image of the Antares. Which was the LM for Apollo 14. The primary objectives of this mission were to explore the Fra Mauro region centered around deployment of the Apollo Lunar Surface Scientific Experiments Package, or ALSEP; lunar field geology investigations; collection of surface material samples for return to Earth; deployment of other scientific instruments not part of ALSEP.
