The Purpose of Rovers

A rover is a planetary surface exploration device designed to move across the solid surface on a planet or other planetary mass celestial bodies. Some rovers have been designed as land vehicles to transport members of a human spaceflight crew; others have been partially or fully autonomous robots. Rovers are typically created to land on another planet (other than Earth) via a lander-style spacecraft, tasked to collect information about the terrain, and to take crust samples such as dust, soil, rocks, and even liquids. They are essential tools in space exploration.

Mars Pathfinder 1997

The History

The first rover, Mars Pathfinder, was launched December 4, 1996 and landed on Mars' Ares Vallis on July 4, 1997. This remarkable accomplishment opened the eyes of NASA. They wanted to create something more advanced and simple. This led to the creation of the rovers Curiosity and Perserverance later.

Delta II Rocket

How Do Rovers Get to Space?

The traditional Delta II rocket (used to lift Spirit) has been used to propel many NASA missions into space and has a history of more than 40 uccessful launches, including Curiosity and Perservernace, but some spacecraft need more energy to propel them on their way to Mars and other planets.
