Perseverance, nicknamed Percy, is a car-sized Mars rover designed to explore the Jezero crater on Mars as part of NASA's Mars 2020 mission. It was manufactured by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and launched on July 30, 2020. As of 30 November 2022, Perseverance has been active on Mars for 650 Earth days, or 1 year, 9 months and 12 days since its landing.

Perseverance is searching for signs of past and present life on Mars, as well as testing out new technologies to aid future human missions to Mars. The rover has a drill to collect core samples of Martian rock and soil, then store them in sealed tubes for pickup by a future mission that would ferry them back to Earth for detailed analysis.

The rover investigated the crater floor and found evidence of igneous, or volcanic, rock. Perseverance has found rich sedimentary rock layers that add more to the story of Mar's ancient climate and environment. The detection occurred in an area where life may have once existed.
