James Dean: Life
James Dean was born February 8, 1931 to Winton Dean and Mildred Wilson. He was their only child. He moved to Los Angelas when he was child when his father changed careers. However, when Dean was nine, his mother died of uterine cancer. From their he lived with his aunt and uncle. Apparently, his mother was the one who had the dream of him being a performer, and as a child he was enrolled in tap dance and violin lessons.
He was popular and talented in highschool, enjoying ice skating, swimming, and cars. He played basketball and excelled at drama and debate. He went to Santa Monica College before transfering to UCLA, changing his major in college from pre-law to drama. This disconnected him from his father. He eventually dropped out of college to pursue acting.
While trying to get jobs in the film industry, Dean worked as a parking lot attendant at CBS studios. He eventually acted in small jobs, such as a Pepsi Cola commercial and and Easter television special. While working at CBS, he met radio director, Rogers Brackett, who eventually cast him in one of his movies, Alias Jane Doe. From there, he appeared in several CBS tv shows before landing a spot in the Actors Studio for method acting.
